Little Ghosts

One of us, wrapped up in the other says ‘I made you up’ which is a good thing to say. But I do not know which one of us is speaking, the world scatters in a puddle’s reflection. All the lights are behind our eyes are but the twinkling of a star’s obituary, cause of death, which reads: swallowed, too much light. One of us is speaking. One of us is singing lullabies to all the little ghosts of things that crawl at our feet. ‘I’m sorry I couldn’t save you.’ One of us carefully does not say.

I’m trying not to let it consume me, but it’s 4:05 am, and I’m staring at the ceiling. Bitterness wets me tongue, and I lick my parched lips. Nothing is heard throughout the house except for the soft hum of the water heater, doing work nobody sees.
